Mozart's Birthday Bash!
On Sunday, November 19, 2006, The Community Music School of the Piedmont invited the community to join us for Mozart's Birthday
Bash! The party commemorated the life and music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of the world's most accomplished musicians.
The Bash featured CMSP faculty and students performing works of Mozart. Wolfgang himself made a surprise appearance! Following the
performance was a birthday party with all the trimmings!!!
The celebration was sponsored by Yount, Hyde and Barbour, a firm of Certified Public Accountants with offices in Winchester, Culpeper,
Leesburg, Middleburg and Richmond, Virginia. “We are happy to sponsor this community wide event with wonderful music in an idyllic
setting” said Bob Dale of YHB, “ I have been very impressed with the school’s commitment to make music accessible to all members of
our community and am delighted to help their efforts.”
Celebrate Virginia's 400th Birthday!
2007 saw many celebrations of the 400th birthday of Virginia across the Commonwealth. On October 28, 2007, CMSP honored the musical
history of Virginia with a selection of instrumental and vocal music provided by CMSP faculty and other guests. Featured were the Goose Creek
Chorale, the Piedmont Chamber Ensemble, and special surprise guest Thomas Jefferson! Generously sponsored by Middleburg’s Thomas
and Talbot Real Estate.
First Annual Candlelight Concert Sparks Glowing Reviews!
“Better than the Kennedy Center.”
That’s how one concertgoer described the “Candlelight Concert,” held March 1, 2008 at Buchanan Hall. Another audience member was
overheard remarking “I can’t believe we didn’t have to go to D.C.” to hear a performance of this caliber.
The concert featured brilliant performances by pianist and Shenandoah University Professor Elizabeth Temple, cellist Cruz Taylor Almao,
violinist Flor Maryory Serrano, and pianist Gerardo Fernandez. Concertgoers were treated to the intimate atmosphere of a candlelit Buchanan
Hall, complimented by champagne, hors d’oeuvres, and a rare proximity to the musicians.
Proceeds from the evening will benefit The Community Music School of the Piedmont’s student scholarships, faculty development and
community outreach programs in the 2008-2009 school year, ensuring that, though the performance may be over for now, the music will still be
there in the future.

John O'Conor and the Royal Irish Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra perform for CMSP Fundraiser
On Sunday, January 25th, 2009, CMSP bid céad míle fáilte (one hundred thousand welcomes) to internationally acclaimed Irish pianist John O’
Conor and the Royal Irish Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra.
Fresh from New York’s famed Carnegie Hall, the Dublin-based musicians performed a splendid classical program that included TC Kelly’s “Three
Pieces for Strings,” Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 3,” Wagner’s “Siegfried Idyll” and Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella Suite.”
Among the many honored guests was Orla O'Hanrahan, Deputy of Mission at the Irish Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Though Upperville's Buchanan Hall is not often the site of a post-Carnegie Hall performance, the quaint village setting only added to the evening's
singular charm. The event was capped off with a post-concert reception with the artists at The Blackthorne Inn, a bit of Ireland in Virginia's Hunt
Country.
The performance was CMSP's Second Annual Candlelight Concert, which raises funds for the school's student scholarship and faculty
development programs. 2009 marks CMSP's 15th year of making high quality music education and performance opportunities available to all
members of the Piedmont community.

Third Annual Candlelight Concert featuring the Hardy-Orkis Duo
The Hardy-Orkis Duo, composed of two Grammy Award-winning Principal Chair members of the National Symphony Orchestra, offered a
dynamic program for the Community Music School of the Piedmont’s Third Annual Candlelight Concert on Sunday, February 21, 2010. The
concert, held at Buchanan Hall in Upperville, featured selections from Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Brahms, and was followed by a special
reception with the musicians at The Blackthorne Inn in Upperville.
David Hardy, Principal Cello of the NSO, and Lambert Orkis, Principal Keyboard of the NSO, first began performing chamber music together in
1983, and were two of the original five founding members of the highly acclaimed Kennedy Center Chamber Players. Their most recent
release on Dorian Recordings is Beethoven Past & Present, which contains two complete performances of Beethoven’s eight works for piano
and cello performed on both modern and period instruments. The Washington Post named Beethoven Past & Present one of the “10 Best
Classical albums of 2009” and called it “an invaluable addition to anyone’s Beethoven library.”
The evening began with a spirited performance of two of Beethoven's works for Piano and Cello, 12 Variations on "Ein Madchen oder
Weibchen" from Mozart's Opera Die Zauberflote and Sonata No. 3 in A major, which can both be found on the duo's latest album. The
program continued with Mendelssohn's Song Without Words, Opus 109 and Brahms' Sonata in E minor. The atmosphere was made all the
more intimate with sprinklings of casual commentary from the performers. A sublime encore rendition of Saint-Saen's The Swan concluded
the concert.
CMSP’s Annual Candlelight Concert is a fundraising event to raise money for student scholarships, community outreach programs and
faculty development initiatives. Last year’s concert, which featured world-renowned Irish pianist John O’Conor and the Royal Irish Academy of
Music Symphony Orchestra, helped provide scholarships for over 100 students. A huge "Thank you!" to all who sponsored and attended this
event!
The Ashburn Girls Guitar Ensemble (AGGE) recently performed at the Middleburg Art Walk on April 16, 2010. Under the direction of Jan
Edmondson, the ensemble is comprised of high-school girls who play music of six centuries, all in the classical style. The evening was part
of the "Minds Wide Open" celebration of Women in the Arts, sponsored by the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

The Community Music School of the Piedmont presents ‘The Joy of Bach’,
the 5th Annual Candlelight Concert featuring the internationally acclaimed J.
Reilly Lewis and performers from The Washington Bach Consort. The
fundraising event and silent auction will take place on Sunday, February 19th,
2012 at 4:00PM at Barton Oaks Ballroom in The Plains Virginia.
The event will feature the highly talented conductor and keyboard artist, J.
Reilly Lewis. “Lewis’s performance journeyed well above the timberline into
the heart and soul of Bach’s genius, said The Washington Post of his playing
and conducting. “It was clear from his reading of it that Lewis loves this
music deeply; it was a performance so tender you never wanted it to end.”
Highlights of this year’s program will include The Italian Concerto, The Anna
Magdalena Bach Notebook, the French Suite in G Major, among others. All
will be performed by stellar soloists and instrumentalists from the
Washington Bach Consort conducted by Maestro Lewis.
As the sole, annual fundraising event for our school, the Candlelight Concert
series was established to provide world-class music to the local community,
and to raise critically needed scholarship and outreach funds for the
Community Music School of the Piedmont. Tickets are on sale now and can
be purchased on the Home Page of our website. We hope you all can make it!
