PRIVATE LESSONS
Individual Instruction
Individual lessons are designed to help students develop musical skills at an ever-increasing level of proficiency. Piano, cello, violin,
viola, guitar, harp, flute, piccolo, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, voice, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, percussion, and organ lessons are
offered. Other instruments are available upon request. Students may participate in one or more recitals held regularly throughout the
school year. Fall and spring semesters, summer instruction also available.
Suzuki Instruction
Suzuki, the Japanese music educator, based his concept of learning music on the child's learning of language, or "mother tongue," by
repetition and imitation. Very young children begin by listening to music and then repeating the music on their instrument. The parent
plays an active role in the Suzuki program, attending classes with their child and supervising practice sessions. Suzuki piano, violin,
and cello instruction is offered.
MUSIC THERAPY
Registered music therapist designs classes to address goals of the student. The classes include moving, listening, singing, and
playing a variety of instruments. These music classes seek to improve communication, cognition, social, emotional, and motor skills of
each participant. These classes enhance self-esteem and quality of life. Please call for schedule and fee information.
GROUP CLASSES
Music Together®
A music education program for very young children, their parents and/or caregivers. Classes include an artistically conceived flow of
songs, movement, nursery rhymes, instrumental jam sessions, and finger plays. These activities help children develop rhythm and
tonal skills. Three 10-week series throughout the year, in fall, winter, and spring at several CMSP locations, as well as a 6-week
summer session. Please see calendar for session start dates.
Early Childhood Music (Infant to five years)
An outreach program conducted on site at the Piedmont Childcare Center. Presents a specially designed curriculum for the childcare
center. Children explore sounds, rhythms, and music patterns through songs, movement and instrumental play. This program of ten
classes is offered in the fall and spring.
Fun with Music (ages 4 -6)
This class is an exciting introduction for children to the world of music. Children enjoy active music-making through a variety of musical
activities such as creative movement, singing, and playing simple instruments. Basic music theory (notes, rhythm, dynamics, tempo) is
introduced. 10 week sessions in the spring and fall. Please see calendar for session start dates.
Musical Journey (ages 6-8)
Children will work on basic musical concepts and skills while learning games, songs, and folk tales from many cultures. They will
explore their own music making using various percussion instruments. Beginning music notation will be introduced. Emphasis is
placed on the creative process, a unity of music, movement, speech, and improvisation.
