General Information and Policies for 2008-2009

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

The Community Music School of the Piedmont (CMSP), a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, offers a wide range of individual and
group lessons, ensembles, community outreach projects. The school, in operation since 1994, is a member of the National
Guild of Community Schools of the Arts.

CMSP is dedicated to providing high quality music instruction and performance opportunities for all members of our Piedmont
community

LOCATIONS        

The school has eight locations:  Upperville, The Plains, Middleburg, Millwood, Aldie, Warrenton, Ashburn, and Purcellville. The
administrative office is located in Upperville, at 9110 John Mosby Highway, Upperville, VA, in Cox Hall at Trinity Church.

REGISTRATION

Registration for classes and private lessons may be completed either in person, by phone, or email. There is an annual
registration fee of $30.00 per student and $15 per student for group classes. When registering, students are expected to
commit to the entire duration of the class or semester.

CALENDAR, FEES AND TUITION

The fall semester begins Tuesday September 2nd, 2008 and runs till the end of December. Spring semester begins the week
of January 5th, 2009 and runs through the end of May. Summer lessons begin in June.

Most private lessons are 16 weeks per semester.  (Some faculty schedules may vary slightly.) Most group classes are held in
ten-week sessions.

Recitals are scheduled regularly throughout the year. Students are encouraged to participate in at least one recital each year.

Payment should be made by check, made payable to “The Community Music School of the Piedmont”

For private lessons:
The fee for instruction is $32.00 per half hour, $64.00 per hour.
Payment options for private lessons:
1.   Payment is due in full prior to the first lesson, or
2.   Payment may be made in two installments of 50% in September and 50% in October.
For spring semester installment payments will be due in January and February.
Summer lessons need to be paid in full in June.

For Group Classes: payment is due in full prior to the first class.

Discounts:

•        Second family member of a household receives a 5% discount on lessons.
•        Students studying with more than one teacher receive a 5% discount on additional lessons.
•        “Endangered instruments”: Students who study or wish to learn an endangered instrument receive a 5% discount.
Examples include: viola, bassoon, oboe, bass, tuba, French horn, organ. Please call to see if your instrument qualifies.

FINANCIAL AID

Funds are available for financial aid to students who demonstrate need. To apply for financial aid, a financial aid form must be
completed and reviewed by the Financial Aid Committee. Forms are available by contacting the CMSP office. Applications are
kept confidential.

MISSED CLASSES / LESSONS

For lesson cancellations please contact the teacher directly. Regular attendance is expected of all students. Students are
charged for all lessons or classes, for which they register, including those missed through student absence. For private
lessons, each student is permitted one excused absence per semester. Students are permitted one make up lesson per
semester. Makeup lessons are scheduled at the end of the spring semester.

WITHDRAWALS & REFUNDS

If, due to circumstances beyond his/her control, a student is forced to discontinue instruction which has been paid for, the
student may request a partial refund. All requests for refunds must be made in writing to the Executive Director. Refunds will be
considered based on the following guidelines:
•         For private lessons, students will be charged for all lessons up to the time that the student notifies the office that
instruction is being terminated. A refund will be made for lessons not received.
•        For classes: a) Prior to first class 100%, b) prior to second class 75%, c) prior to third class 50%.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

Lessons and classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather. Given our broad geographic area, please call the school for
a recorded message regarding the status of lessons and classes. Be aware that individual instructors may have other
procedures with which you should become familiar.
