Third Annual Candlelight Concert featuring the Hardy-Orkis Duo
The Hardy-Orkis Duo, composed of two Grammy Award-winning Principal Chair members of the National Symphony
Orchestra, offered a dynamic program for the Community Music School of the Piedmont’s Third Annual Candlelight Concert
on Sunday, February 21, 2010. The concert, held at Buchanan Hall in Upperville, featured selections from Beethoven,
Mendelssohn and Brahms, and was followed by a special reception with the musicians at The Blackthorne Inn in Upperville.
David Hardy, Principal Cello of the NSO, and Lambert Orkis, Principal Keyboard of the NSO, first began performing chamber
music together in 1983, and were two of the original five founding members of the highly acclaimed Kennedy Center
Chamber Players. Their most recent release on Dorian Recordings is Beethoven Past & Present, which contains two
complete performances of Beethoven’s eight works for piano and cello performed on both modern and period instruments.
The Washington Post named Beethoven Past & Present one of the “10 Best Classical albums of 2009” and called it “an
invaluable addition to anyone’s Beethoven library.”
The evening began with a spirited performance of two of Beethoven's works for Piano and Cello, 12 Variations on "Ein
Madchen oder Weibchen" from Mozart's Opera Die Zauberflote and Sonata No. 3 in A major, which can both be found on the
duo's latest album. The program continued with Mendelssohn's Song Without Words, Opus 109 and Brahms' Sonata in E
minor. The atmosphere was made all the more intimate with sprinklings of casual commentary from the performers. A
sublime encore rendition of Saint-Saen's The Swan concluded the concert.
CMSP’s Annual Candlelight Concert is a fundraising event to raise money for student scholarships, community outreach
programs and faculty development initiatives. Last year’s concert, which featured world-renowned Irish pianist John O’Conor
and the Royal Irish Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, helped provide scholarships for over 100 students. A huge
"Thank you!" to all who sponsored and attended this event!

501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Hungry for Music’s mission is to “inspire underprivileged children through positive musical and creative
experiences.”
Alex's own interest in violin began at the age of 3, after seeing it featured on an episode of "Sesame Street." Suzuki violin lessons followed at
age 5. In the eight years since he has participated in a variety of workshops, ensembles, masterclasses and more. The instrument has even
taken him to such far-off destinations as Iceland.
"Music has been a big part of my life and I want everyone to have the same opportunity I have had to learn how to play an instrument."
